Getting to Know Abby:
What is your background?
I have always loved to draw and have been creating art from an early age. I developed a passion for the arts as I grew older and was strongly influenced in my teens after learning about art and artists through the ages. I followed my passion into college and earned a BFA in 1981.
What is the traditional art form or craft you do?
I dabbled in ceramics in college, but it wasn’t my focus. Always seeking inspiration and having a desire to learn, I took a class at the local community college about 15 years ago and truly fell in love with the medium.
How long does it take to make a finished piece?
In my experience, all art is a process, and that is part of the attraction, so completion varies. The material always speaks to the artist and directs the outcome intuitively. Currently, a completed functional piece of pottery takes about 3-4 weeks, from lump of clay, to drying, firing, glazing and firing again. It’s always magical opening the kiln at the end of the process.
